Bernard Dunstan

Born 1920 in Teddington, Middlesex, and educated at St. Paul's School, London. Bernard studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1939 and subsequently at the Slade School of Fine Art till 1941. Bernard had a long successful teaching career at numerous prestigious Art Schools. He was elected Member of the New English Art Club in 1947 and elected full Member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1968. He was President of the Royal West of England Academy of Art from 1979 till 1984. Bernard is best known for his intimate figures within an interior setting, usually painted on a small scale which is reminiscent of the works of Edgar Degas (1934-1917), Walter Sickert (1860-1942) and Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940). His is a remarkable talent as he skilfully fuses oil paints to produce his subtle colour effects and superb skin tones. He has held numerous one-man exhibitions at home and abroad. He exhibits regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition where his paintings always sell at the beginning of the opening day. His paintings hang in many public, corporate and private collections throughout the world. Bernard is the author of several books. His work has been the subject of numerous publications and articles. He is married to fellow painter and Royal Academician, Diana Armfield, and lives in Kew, Surrey.
