Sheila Vaughan

Sheila has always lived and worked in the north of England. She has won several awards for her painting including the Society of Women Artists’ Barbara Tate Memorial Award in 2013. She has exhibited constantly in the last ten years both in London and in the North, in particular at the Stockport Guild exhibitions where she has won the Jack Lees Certificate of Merit twice in the last five years. In 2016 Sheila had two pieces shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, one of them being accepted and exhibited.  Her work is held in collections worldwide. Sheila continuously experiments with style and technique, believing that the process or the journey is as fascinating, or even more important, for an Artist, than the outcome. Allowing the work to dictate its own direction is also important for her.  An interest in complex systems theory led to the current focus on the inclusion of natural materials. These include such materials as pumice, ballast, sand and marble dust, and a closer attention to abstract line and form. She believes that content is always there behind the scenes in even the most abstract of work, and welcomes the viewer to relate to the work on their own terms.
